SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF WARTS

  • Cauliflower shaped growths in the skin, hand, foot or genital area
  • Itching around the warts
  • Warts are painful when occurring in the soles
  • Warts may occur in the external genitals, vulva, cervix, shaft of penis, scrotum or anus

CAUSES OF WARTS

  • Wart is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV)

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF WARTS

HPV infects the squamous epithelium of the skin. Genital wart is transmitted from one person to another through sexual intercourse. The virus causes bumps in the genital area. The virus penetrates the skin and mucous membrane in the genital area.

DIAGNOSIS OF WARTS

  • History taking
  • Physical examination
  • Skin biopsy
  • Genital warts are diagnosed through;
  • Laboratory investigations like paps test
  • Acetic acid test
  • DNA test

TREATMENTS FOR WARTS

  • Antiviral drugs
  • Topical medications
  • Surgical interventions
  • Cryotherapy
  • Laser therapy 

PROGNOSIS OF WARTS

  • Prognosis is based on the stage of the disease and condition of the patient.
  • The undiagnosed or untreated warts leads to complications

COMPLICATIONS OF WARTS       

  • It causes complications in pregnant women
  • Spreading of the infection to other sites of the body
  • Cervical cancer
  • Permanent nail dystrophy

WARTS AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda,warts are managed based on the treatment of ‘charmakeela’. Genital warts are diagnosed as “yoni arsas”

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF WARTS

  • Agantu factor – infection

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF WARTS

  • Small bumps or growths in the skin, yoni (vulva)

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF WARTS

Wart is considered as an agantuja vyadhi, because it is caused by the infection. When the virus enters into the body the doshas vitiated, which further vitiates the rakta, mamsa dhatus and produces the symptoms.

LAKSHANA- AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF WARTS

  • Growths in the skin, yoni (vulva)
  • Kandu – itching

  • Prognosis is krichra sadhya – difficult to cure

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR WARTS

  • Avoid food items that produce dosha imbalance like sour, acrid and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Proper hygiene
  • Use a condom during sexual intercourse (to avoid genital warts)
  • Avoid red meat, caffeine in the diet 

YOGA FOR WARTS

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayama    – Gets relief from irritations associated with warts and provide overall immunity

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
