SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA

  • Excruciating pain on any side of the face, head
  • Spasm of the facial muscles
  • Pain may radiate to other areas of your face and neck
  • Pain around the eye may also found
  • Pain triggered by touch, chewing, biting, brushing, smiling etc
  • The pain usually manifested in the one side of the face
  • The intensity of pain lasted for few seconds to several minutes

CAUSES OF TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA

  • Ageing
  • Brain lesions
  • Injuries
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Compression of the trigeminal nerve

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA

The pathophysiology of trigeminal neuralgia is based on different mechanisms. Generally, the pressure exerted on the trigeminal nerve causes symptoms. Nerve compression occurs due to the above-mentioned causes. It is triggered by even mild touch to the face.

PROGNOSIS OF TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA

  • In primary trigeminal neuralgia, symptoms are manageable with medications
  • Prognosis of secondary trigeminal neuralgia is based on the underlying pathology

  • In Ayurveda,trigeminal neuralgia is managed based on the ‘ shirasoola chikilsa’ particularly ‘ananthavata’.
  • As per ayurveda the types of shirasoola are vatika, paithika, kaphaja, sannipathika, krimija suryavarta, anandavata, ardhavabhedaka, shankhaka

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA

  • Excess consumption of ununctuous, dry, acrid, cold food
  • Excessive physical exercise
  • Suppression of natural urges
  • Agantufactors  – injuries

  • pain on anywhere in the face after mild trigger

  • Vata, pitta and kapha dosha move through all channels of circulation. Due to the subtle nature of vata it impels the remaining two doshas.
  • Due to the causative factors doshas excessively aggravated.
  • The aggravated doshas reside in the head and face and produce pain.

  • Consume easily digestible food items, cow’s milk
  • Practice regular exercise
  • Oil massage on the head is advised. Which alleviates vata dosha
  • Take proper rest.

YOGA FOR TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – calms the mind, cleans the respiration and gets relief from  aches

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
