PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF TONSILITIS

The tonsils are the immune system’s first line of defence against infections. Due to bacterial or viral infections, inflammation of tonsils occurs leads to symptoms.

Ayurveda explains that it is caused by the vitiation and imbalance of Doshas (bodily humors), i.e., Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Mainly derangement of Kapha and Rakta (blood) is preceded by impaired digestive capacity (Mandagni/Vishamagni) and obstruction of channels (Sroto Avarodha) namely Annavaha Srotas (gastrointestinal tract) and Pranavaha Srotas (respiratory tract) which is manifested as difficulty in swallowing, mouth breathing, choking spells at night, etc.

  • Gargling with warm water mixed with salt

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR TONSILITIS

  • Avoid food items that produce dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume a balanced diet
  • Clean the mouth properly after food
  • Brushing two times a day

YOGA FOR TONSILITIS

  • Nadi shuddi pranayam    – calms the mind and gets relief from aches and pains

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
