Teething is the process of eruption of a baby’s teeth. Many symptoms are manifested during the process of teething. Generally teething is occurs between 6 to 24 months of age.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF TEETHING 

The associated symptoms include:

  •  Drooling
  • Swelling in the gums
  • Tenderness on the gums
  • Gum discomfort
  • Irritations
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Avoidance of food due to gum irritations
  • Rubbing of cheek
  • Biting
  • Low-grade fever

 PHYSIOLOGY OF TEETHING 

Teething is the process by which a tooth moves from the pre-eruptive position in the alveolar bone through the mucosa into the oral cavity.

DIAGNOSIS OF TEETHING 

  • Examination of the oral cavity
  • Based on signs and symptoms

TREATMENTS FOR TEETHING 

  • Analgesic/antipyretics
  • Topical anaesthetic agents

COMPLICATIONS OF TEETHING             

  • Profuse diarrhoea manifested in some leads to dehydration
  • Refusal of food due to the soreness of the gum region may cause malnutrition

TEETHING AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda,teething is elaborately explained in the book named ‘Kasyapa samhita’ in ‘dantajanmikam adhyaya’.
  • As per Kashyapa Samhita, the authentic Ayurvedic paediatric book, out of these, eight erupt once (Sakrijjatha) rest erupt twice (dwija). The central incisors are called Rajadanta, lateral incisors as Bastadanta, canines are called Damshtra and the rest which grows in original roots are called Hanavya . In what so ever month teeth erupt after birth, shedding occurs in the corresponding year of life.
  • The primary dentition is comprised of 20 teeth.

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF TEETHING 

  • Pain and swelling in the gums (danta mamsa)

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PHYSIOLOGY OF TEETHING 

  • Danta is considered as the upadhatu of Asthi dhatu
  • The Dasanas or Dantas are considered as Ruchakasthi, one among the type of Asthi’s.
  • The dhathus which are involved in the eruption of teeth are Asthi and Majja. The dhathus get localised in the root of gums and along with doshas results in tooth eruption.

  • Ruk – pain
  • Sopha – swelling
  • Fever – jwara
  •  Headache – shirasula
  •  Thirst – trishna
  • Vertigo- bhrama

  • Mild heat application on the affected area by cotton dipped with hot water
  • Application of salt reduces the gum inflammation

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR TEETHING 

  • Avoid food items that produce dosha imbalance like dry food, hard to digest by the mother. Because dosha imbalance in breast milk aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items to the child
  • Clean the mouth properly after food
