PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF ITCHY EYES

Itchy eyes are immunologically mediated. It occurs as a result of IgE mediated reactions that cause mast cell degranulation and histamine release. 

DIAGNOSIS OF ITCHY EYES

  •  Proper examination of eyes
  • Schirmer’s test – to find out dry eyes
  • Tear osmolarity test – to find out tear problems
  • The test is done to find out other systemic involvement

TREATMENTS OF ITCHY EYES

  • Eye drops
  • Antibiotics – to control infections
  • Tear stimulating drugs for treating dry eyes
  • Treatment for underlying pathology
  • Using a special contact lens to itching due to dry eyes

PROGNOSIS OF ITCHY EYES

  • Prognosis of itchy eyes is based on the cause. Generally, symptoms are manageable with proper treatments.

  • Avoid food items which produce kapha dosha imbalance like cold, unctuous food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume a balanced diet rich in vitamin A

YOGA FOR ITCHY EYES

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – Calms the mind and gets relief from the eye irritations associated with itchy eyes 

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
