  1. What is herbal tea?

Herbal tea is the infusion or decoction of herbs, spices, or other plant material in hot water.

  • How to make herbal tea?

The quantity of ingredients depends on the type of herbal tea. Generally for 4 glass of water 2 or 3 teaspoons of tea powder and a small quantity of other ingredients like ginger, tulsi, cardamom, lemongrass etc are added. Boiling of water with these ingredients not needed. Herbal tea is a type of infusion. Here crushed powder of ingredients is kept inside the boiled water for a certain period. Then the liquid is strained and poured in to cup. After preparation, the lemon juice can be added to it.

  • Is green tea herbal tea?

Herbs generally refer to the leafy green or flowering parts of a plant (either fresh or dried), while spices are usually dried and produced from other parts of the plant, including seeds, bark, roots and fruits. Green tea is prepared from the dried tea leaves after processing. To this other ingredients like cardamom, cinnamon etc can be added. Thus green tea can be considered a herbal tea.

  • Is chai tea herbal?

Chai is prepared from tea powder and water. Tea powder is prepared from the leaves of Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub native to China and East Asia. It can be prepared with or without adding milk. To this cardamom can be added to increase the taste and flavour. So it is considered a herbal tea.

  • Does herbal tea have caffeine?

The tea contains caffeine, the amount of caffeine in tea can vary significantly depending on the origin, type, and preparation of the tea.  Tea leaves contain 3.5% caffeine. Herbal tea prepared in combination with tea powder or coffee contains caffeine.

  • Is herbal tea a diuretic?

The diuretic effect of herbal tea is based on the nature of individual ingredients. Generally, the intake of herbal tea promotes urination. Herbal tea with a diuretic effect relieves water retention.

  • Does herbal tea dehydrate you?

Herbal tea is a form of water supplementation to the body. Hence it hydrates the body. Herbal tea can be administrated after profuse diarrhoea because it rehydrates the body. 

  • Can you drink herbal tea while pregnant?

Herbal tea can be prepared with a wide range of herbs. The properties and action of the chemical constituents of these herbs are complex and not fully elucidated. Hence herbal tea can be avoided during pregnancy. The herbal tea prepared with tea powder and coffee is relatively safe.

  1. Can you drink too much herbal tea?

Drinking a large amount of herbal tea is not recommended. The herbal tea prepared with tea powder contains caffeine hence it causes adverse effects on the body.

  1. Is herbal tea acidic?

Black and green tea is usually less acidic than coffee. The acidity of herbal tea depends on the individual ingredients. The herbal tea with lemon juice is more acidic. The addition of more water reduces acidity. The pH of black tea ranges from 4 to 6 and the pH of green tea is 7 to 10.

Herbal tea is not pure water, because it contains more hot water-soluble ingredients. It can be considered as a good supplementation of water.
