CAUSES OF FOOD POISONING

  • Bacterial infections – Escherichia coli, Clostridium botulinum, Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus aureus
  • Viral infections – rotavirus

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF FOOD POISONING

The microbe enters into the gut through contaminated food and water, followed by colonization of the epithelial layer of the small intestine by penetrating the mucous. The penetration of the mucous is facilitated by mucolytic enzymes. The production of endotoxin by the bacteria is the major key factor for the virulence mechanism. Food poisoning results in diarrhoea that is either secretory or inflammatory, resulting from either damage to the intestinal mucosa (via cytotoxins) or alteration of the balance between absorption and secretion, causing loss of salt and water from the gut (via enterotoxins).

Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
