SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF FLATULENCE

  • Discomfort in the abdomen
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal distension

CAUSES OF FLATULENCE

  • Swallow air during eating and drinking
  • Intake of gas-forming food items such as dairy products, vegetables like onion, cabbage, beans, pulses, cereals like wheat and oats
  • Celiac disease
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Constipation
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Medications like laxatives, antibiotics

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF FLATULENCE

Due to the above-mentioned causes more air filled in the stomach and expels out.

DIAGNOSIS OF FLATULENCE

  • Proper history taking from the patient to find out the number of farting per day etc
  • Underlying diseases like acid regurgitation, oesophageal and stomach ulcers can be diagnosed through endoscopic techniques.
  • Ultrasound scans
  • Mal digestion tests
  • Hydrogen and methane tests

TREATMENTS FOR FLATULENCE

  • Take probiotic supplements to aid in digestion and reduce the attack of flatulence
  • Antacids
  • Lactase

PROGNOSIS OF FLATULENCE

  • Prognosis is based on the cause of the disease, duration  and condition of the patient

  • In Ayurveda,flatulence falls under Vata dosha imbalance disorder.

  • Excess consumption of ununctuous, dry, cold food
  • Suppression of natural urges
  • Food that aggravates vata dosha like peas, dals, dry foods
  • Indigestion (ajeerna)

  • Anaha – abdominal distention
  • soola – Stomach pain

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF FLATULENCE

  • Vata, pitta and kapha dosha move through all channels of circulation. Due to the subtle nature of vata it impels the remaining two doshas.
  • The aggravated vata having provoked these two doshas, exacerbated and fills up the empty channels and moves greatly inside them or by getting enveloped by the other doshas.
  • Due to the causative factors, vata dosha vitiated and flatulence occurs

  • Mix freshly ground ginger root to one cup boiling water and consume in lukewarm condition

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR FLATULENCE

  • Avoid food items which produce vata dosha imbalance like cold, acrid and dry food, hard to digest. Because vata dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Avoid chewing gums.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol and carbonated drinks.
  • Doing exercise
  • Eating slowly

YOGA FOR FLATULENCE

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – cleans the airways

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.

                            

  • Pavanamukthasana – removes the excess air from the digestive system
