SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF COLD

  • Running nose
  • Sneezing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Mild fever

CAUSES OF COLD

  • Viral infection – rhinoviruses

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF COLD

Rhinoviruses enter the body through the mouth, eyes or nose. The virus can spread through droplets in the air. It also spreads by direct contact with someone who has cold or by sharing contaminated objects. Increased nasal secretions cause running nose.

DIAGNOSIS OF COLD

  • Diagnosis is based on the proper examination of signs and symptoms
  • Chest X-ray

TREATMENTS FOR COLD

  • Decongestant nasal drops or sprays
  • Antipyretics
  • Antibiotics – in the case of secondary bacterial infections

PROGNOSIS OF COLD

  • Cold is a self-limiting disease. Symptoms subside within two weeks.

COMPLICATIONS OF COLD          

  • Pneumonia
  • Bronchitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Otitis media
  • Asthma

COLD AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda,cold is known as pinasa or pratishyaya.

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF COLD

  • Excess consumption of ununctuous, cold food
  • Vegasandharana – Suppression of natural urges.
  • Ajeerna (indigestion)
  • Raja (dust)
  • Rtuvaishamya (seasonal variation)
  • Shiroabhitapa (exposure to sun/ trauma)
  • Prajagara (night waking)
  • Atisvapna (excess sleeping)
  • Ambusheeta (cold water)
  • Dhooma(smoke)

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR COLD

  • Avoid food items which produce dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items, lukewarm water
  • Avoid head bathing
  • Avoid exposure to the cold environment

YOGA FOR COLD

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – Cleans the respiratory passage removes the nasal congestion

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
