SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CLUSTER HEADACHES

  • Excruciating pain on one side of the head
  • Pain may radiate to other areas of your face and neck
  • Pain around the eye and redness of eyes
  • Watering eyes
  • Running nose
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Restlessness
  • Sweating

CAUSES OF CLUSTER HEADACHES

  • The exact cause is unknown
  • Genetic factors
  • Hypothalamus play a major role in frequent attacks
  • Cluster headaches triggered by smoking and alcohol

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF CLUSTER HEADACHES

The pathophysiology of cluster headaches is based on different mechanisms. These include vascular dilation, trigeminal nerve stimulation, and circadian effects. Histamine release, an increase in mast cells, and autonomic nervous system activation may also contribute to the attacks of cluster headaches.

YOGA FOR CLUSTER HEADACHES

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – calms the mind, cleans the respiration and gets relief from  headaches

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
