DURVADI GHRUTHAM – Benefits, Ingredients, Indications, Dosage, Usage, Preparation, Side effects, Equivalent Medicines, Research Papers

Durvadi ghrutham is described in Bhaishajya Ratnavali Rakthapitta chikitsa (bleeding disorders). The reference is also seen in Sahasrayogam. This formulation can be used for internal administration, as coryllium or filling ears in suitable clinical conditions. In this formulation the goat’s ghee is used.

INDICATIONS

Durvadi ghrutham can be given internally in,

  • Vomiting of blood
  • For bleeding through nose it is given as nasal instillation
  • For bleeding through ears, it is filled in ear.
  • As coryllium in eyes or filling eyes (Tarpana)
  • In case of bleeding per rectum or genitals given as vasthi
  • If bleeding occurs through hair follicles ghee is used for external application

METHOD OF PREPARATION

Preparation of Kalka dravya (paste of drugs)

12 g of each drug were taken and made into very fine paste.

Preparation of Tandulodaka

Prepared by macerating milled rice in eight times water and its water is filtered and collected as Tandulodaka.

Preparation of ghee

768 ml of ghee taken in a suitable vessel to which the paste of drugs prepared is added followed by addition of tadulodaka. Cooking of ghee was done in mild fire. When kalka starts separated from the ghee the goat’s milk of required quantity is added and cooking continued with constant stirring. When the paste if drugs attained a stage when it can be rolled into a wick shape the fire turned off and ghee was filtered and collected. This was then stored in a suitable container.

PROPERTIES OF INGREDIENTS

4 Elavaluka Balances kapha vata dosha and cures itching, wounds, vomiting, excessive thirst, cough, anorexia, poisoning, bleeding disorders, diseases of urinary system and burning sensation.
6 Seeta (chandana) Balance kapha and pitta dosha. It detoxifies blood and used in bleeding disorders, acts as aphrodisiac, anti-toxic, coolant and relieves thirst, tiredness, fatigue, etc.
7 Useera Pacifies vata and pitta dosha. It is having antioxidant property. It relives excessive thirst, burning sensation, fever, etc. it improves complexion, promotes lactation and cures vomiting.
8 Musta It is used as absorbent, digestive and carminative. It is used in the management of fever, thirst, anorexia, worm infestation, bleeding disorders, diarrhoea.
9 Raktachandana It is useful against psychological imbalances and disorders and balances kapha pitta dosha. It improves vision and is aphrodisiac, coolant, cures fatigue, thirst, bleeding disorders, burning sensation etc.
10 Padmaka It is light to digest and acts as coolant. It pacifies kapha pitta dosha and acts as garbhasthapana.

The drugs are generally coolant and cures pitta vitiation. Durva (conch grass) is famous for its raktha sthambana (to arrest bleeding) action. All the other drugs also effectively check bleeding and so can be judiciously used in haemorrhagic diseases.

DOSAGE:

5 to 10 ml is given for internal administration. This also used as coryllium and filling ears in appropriate quantities.

EXERCISE AND YOGA

Suitable exercise can be adopted considering the health and disease of the patient. Can do yoga postures like,

  • Sooryanamaskara
  • Bhujangasana
  • Gomukhasana, etc.
  • Anuloma viloma pranayama      

APATHYAS DURING THE USE OF DURVADI GHRUTHAM

No contraindications are said in the classics. Usually, the diet and regimen are decided considering the disease. It is better to avoid hot spicy and heavy foods.

SIDE EFFECTS

No side effects are noticed.
