SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CARBUNCLE

  • Bumps on the skin
  • Itching
  • Fever
  • Pustules
  • Crust formation
  • Redness around the carbuncle
  • Pain on touch
  • Inflammation around the carbuncle

CAUSES OF CARBUNCLE

  • Bacterial infections
  • Poor hygiene
  • Diabetes
  • Other skin infections

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF CARBUNCLE

The microorganisms such as bacteria affect the hair follicles leads to inflammation of the follicles followed by the formation of small itchy boils. These boils united to form carbuncles under the skin.

DIAGNOSIS OF CARBUNCLE

  • Carbuncle is diagnosed by the proper inspection of the site.
  • Laboratory tests to find out the underlying pathology

TREATMENTS FOR CARBUNCLE

  • Incision and drainage
  • Antibiotics

PROGNOSIS OF CARBUNCLE

  • Carbuncle is manageable, recurrence is common

COMPLICATIONS OF CARBUNCLE         

  • Permanent skin damage
  • Infection may spread to the whole body
  • Sepsis

CARBUNCLE AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda,carbuncle can be managed based on the treatment of ‘pitaka’ and ‘prameha pitaka’

  • Pitta and kapha dosha vitiation

Due to the causative factors, pitta and kapha dosha becomes vitiated and further vitiates the rakta dhatu. This causes paka(inflammation) leads to carbuncles.

HOME REMEDIES FOR CARBUNCLE

  • Gently rub the area with a wet cloth to loosen the crust.
  • Application of apple cider on the skin
  • Massage with coconut oil

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR CARBUNCLE

  • Avoid food items which produce dosha imbalance like cold, acrid, sour and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Intake of proper amounts of fluids
  • Combs and towels are not shared with others

YOGA FOR CARBUNCLE

  • Nadi shuddi pranayam    – calms the mind and gets relief from recurrence of carbuncle

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
