SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BURNS

  • Signs and symptoms are based on the degree of burns
  • First degree burns are the less severe type of burn, affecting only the outer layer of skin. 
  • In second-degree burns, blisters are formed and are painful.
  • Third-degree burns cause damage to all layers of the skin.
  • The general symptoms are;
  • Blister formation
  • Peeling of skin
  • Discolouration
  • Sweating
  • Redness around the burns
  • Pain on touch
  • Inflammation around the burns

CAUSES OF BURNS

  • Fire
  • Hot liquid or steam
  • Hot objects
  • Sunburn
  • Electricity
  • Strong radiations
  • Chemicals such as strong acids

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF BURNS

Heat causes coagulation necrosis of skin and subcutaneous tissue. The increased microvascular permeability and vascular dilatation lead to oedema. In severe burns, hypovolaemia may occur due to loss of fluids.

DIAGNOSIS OF BURNS

  • History taking
  • Degree and severity of burns is diagnosed by the proper inspection of the site.

TREATMENTS FOR BURNS

  • Application of creams and ointments
  • Antibiotics – to prevent bacterial infection
  • Iv fluids to prevent dehydration
  • Treatment for pain and inflammation

PROGNOSIS OF BURNS

  • Prognosis of burns is based on the severity and degree of burns

COMPLICATIONS OF BURNS        

  • Permanent skin damage
  • Organ damage
  • Hypovolemia
  • Infections

BURNS AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda,burns can be managed based on the treatment of ‘dagdha vrana’ and ‘pitta vridhi’

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF BURNS

  • Agni – fire
  • Ushna jala – hot water
  • Ushna taila – hot oil
  • Overexposure to sunlight

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF BURNS

  • Inflammatory reactions in the skin

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF BURNS

Due to the causative factors, pitta dosha becomes vitiated and further vitiates the rakta dhatu . This causes paka(inflammation) that leads to blisters, burning pain, rashes.

Types of dagdha vrana are;

  • Plushta – the pigmented area with a severe burning sensation
  • Durdagdha – the appearance of blisters
  • Samyak dagdha – bluish back colour
  • Atidagdha – severe burns

LAKSHANA- AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BURNS

  • Daha – burning sensation
  • Sopha – inflammation
  • Rakta varna – reddish colour
  • Jwara – fever
  • Trishna – thirst

  • Prognosis is based on the stage of dagdha vrana

  • Wear loose dress
  • Application of aloe vera gel on the site of burns
  • Intake of gooseberry – cools the body
  • If the burn is much severe consult a physician

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR BURNS

  • Avoid food items which produce dosha imbalance like cold, acrid, sour and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Intake of proper amounts of fluids

YOGA FOR BURNS

  • Nadi shuddi pranayam    – calms the mind and cools the body

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
