BED WETTING- Ayurvedic concept, Treatment, Herbal Medicines, Home Remedies

Bed wetting is also known as enuresis. It can be defined as the involuntary passage of urine by a child beyond an age when they might reasonably be expressed to have toilet training and control.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BED WETTING

  • Involuntary urination while asleep

CAUSES OF BED WETTING

  • Bladder neck obstruction
  • Ectopic urethral opening
  • Epispadias
  • Developmental delay
  • Psychosocial factors like anxiety
  • Genetic factors
  • Sleep disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Chronic constipation

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF BED WETTING

Due to the above-mentioned causes child become unable to control the urge for urination during sleeping.

DIAGNOSIS OF BED WETTING

  • a child over the age of 5 or 6 who still wets the bed
  • a child who starts bedwetting at night after having stopped for six months or more
  • urinary symptoms such as urinating frequently or having pain with urination
  • excessive weight loss or thirst
    • Laboratory tests can be done to make sure the bedwetting isn’t caused by a urinary tract infection or by other medical conditions such as diabetes.

  • Management of underlying disease

PROGNOSIS OF BED WETTING

  • Prognosis is based on the cause of the diseases, duration  and condition of the patient

COMPLICATIONS OF BED WETTING

  • Guilt and embarrassment, which can lead to low self-esteem
  • Loss of opportunities for social activities, such as sleepovers and camp
  • Rashes on the child’s bottom and genital area — especially if your child sleeps in wet underwear

BED WETTING AND AYURVEDA

Bedwetting in Ayurveda known as sayyamutra. In Ayurvedic classics, the brief description regarding Shayyamutra is found in Sharangadhara and Vangasena Samhita.

NIDANA- Ayurvedic CAUSES OF BED WETTING

In this disease, mainly Vata (Apan Vayu), Pitta (Pachaka), Kapha (Tarpaka), along with Manasika dosha tama are involved (vitiated). Dushya involved is Rasa (Ambu) dhatu. Vitiation of Mutravaha and Manovaha srotas is found in the form of untimely and increased frequency of urine at night.

  • Unable to control the urge of urination even in the day time

SAMPRAPTHI –MATURATION OF BED WETTING

Defective functioning of apana vayu which controls the evacuation of the urine and stools leads to sayyamutra. Any condition which hinders the maturation of dosha and dhatus may contribute the sayyamutra.

HOME REMEDIES

  • Intake of Indian gooseberry – By preventing urinary or intestinal infections, it is quite helpful in case of sudden urination while at sleep.
  • Caffeine-containing drinks are discouraged for children at any time of day. Because caffeine may stimulate the bladder, it’s especially discouraged in the evening.

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR

  • Avoid food items which produce vata dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because vata imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Avoid intake of more water in the evening.
  • Encourage regular toilet use throughout the day.
