PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF UVEITIS 

The pathophysiology of uveitis depends on the causative factor. Inflammation of the middle layer of the eye causes breakage in the blood eye barrier. Inflammation causes iris tissue to become sticky.

DIAGNOSIS OF UVEITIS 

  •  Proper examination of eyes by the physician
  • Vision test
  • Ophthalmoscopy
  • Slit-lamp examination

TREATMENTS OF UVEITIS 

  • Antibiotics – to control infections
  • Antihistamines
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs

PROGNOSIS OF UVEITIS 

  • Generally, symptoms are manageable with proper treatments.

COMPLICATIONS OF UVEITIS 

  • Glaucoma
  • Retinal detachment
  • Damage to the optic nerve
  • Permanent  loss of vision
  • Cataract

  • As per Ayurveda, it can be correlated with ‘pittaja and rakthaja adhimanta’

Due to the causative factors, excess vitiation of dosha occurs. The aggravated doshas reside on the middle layer of the eye and produce the symptoms of uveitis.

  • Avoid prolonged use of computer
  • Drinking an adequate quantity of water
  • Wash the eye frequently using plain water

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR UVEITIS 

  • Avoid food items that produce dosha imbalance like incompatible food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume a balanced diet rich in vitamin A 
  • Avoid exposure to sunlight
  • Avoid exposure to dust and smoke

YOGA FOR UVEITIS 

  • Nadi shuddi pranayam    – calms the mind and gets relief from the eye irritations associated with uveitis  

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
