URINARY INCONTINENCE AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda, urinary incontinence is symptomatologically managed based on the treatment of mootra krichra, asmari, mootraghata, prameha etc.

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF URINARY INCONTINENCE

  • Excess consumption of unctuous, cold food
  • Suppression of urge for urination
  • Agantu factors – infections, injuries

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF URINARY INCONTINENCE

  • Leaking of urine

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF URINARY INCONTINENCE

In Mootra krichra, the vitiated Pitta Dosha along with Vata (mainly Apana Vayu) on reaching Vasti (bladder) afflicts the Mootravaha Srothas due to which the patient feels difficulty in micturition. The above-mentioned symptomatology has a close resemblance to urinary tract infections. Urinary calculi (asmari) are one of the causes of urinary incontinence. Doshas associated with the predominance of kapha leads to asmari. Prameha chikilsa in Ayurveda is found to be more effective in controlling urge incontinence.

LAKSHANA- AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF URINARY INCONTINENCE

  • Leaking of urine or dribbling of urine

AYURVEDIC PROGNOSIS OF URINARY INCONTINENCE

  • Prognosis of urinary incontinence based on the severity of disease and condition of the patient

CHIKITSA- AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR URINARY INCONTINENCE

COMMONLY USED AYURVEDIC MEDICINES FOR URINARY INCONTINENCE

Internal administration

HOME REMEDIES FOR URINARY INCONTINENCE

  • Heat application on the lower abdomen by a towel dipped with hot water to relieve symptoms associated with calculi and cystitis.
  • Maintain weight
  • Caffeine-containing drinks are discouraged at any time of day. Because caffeine may stimulate the bladder, it’s especially discouraged in the evening.

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR URINARY INCONTINENCE

  • Avoid food items that produce vata dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because vata imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Avoid intake of more water in the evening.

YOGA FOR URINARY INCONTINENCE

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – calms the mind and gets relief from the discomfort associated with urinary incontinence

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
