SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF EAR INFECTIONS 

  • Dull or sharp pain in the ear
  • Ear pain  may be associated with headache, ear discharge or nausea
  • Ear discharges
  • Fever
  • Vertigo
  • Nasal congestion

CAUSES OF EAR INFECTIONS 

  • Ear infection caused by bacteria or viruses in the middle ear
  • Sinus infection
  • Cold
  • Infected adenoids

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF EAR INFECTIONS 

A middle ear infection is also known as otitis media. It’s caused by fluid trapped behind the eardrum, which causes the eardrum to bulge. Ear pain caused due to the pressure gradient between the middle ear and outside air. A middle ear pressure gradient usually involves eustachian tube obstruction, which inhibits equilibration between middle ear pressure and atmospheric pressure and also allows fluid to accumulate in the middle ear. Otitis media (infection and inflammation of the middle ear) causes painful inflammation of the tympanic membrane (TM).

  • Antibiotics
  • Ear drops
  •  Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug

  • Treatment of underlying pathology

PROGNOSIS OF EAR INFECTIONS 

  • Prognosis is based on the cause of the disease, duration and condition of the patient. Generally, symptoms are curable with antibiotic therapy.

COMPLICATIONS OF EAR INFECTIONS             

  • Hearing loss
  • Perforation of the eardrum
  • Meningitis

EAR INFECTIONS AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda, the ear infection is managed based on the treatment of ‘karna sula’, Karna srava’, ‘krimi karna’, ‘karna paka’.

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF EAR INFECTIONS 

  • Excess consumption of unctuous, cold food
  • Excess vitiation of dosha
  • Agantu factors – infection
  • Water trapped in the ear

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF EAR INFECTIONS 

  • Vata, pitta and kapha dosha move through all channels of circulation. Due to the subtle nature of vata it impels the remaining two doshas.
  • The aggravated vata having provoked these two doshas, exacerbated and fills up the empty channels and moves greatly inside them or by getting enveloped by the other doshas.
  • The aggravated doshas reside in the ear and produce karna srava and karna sula.

  • Massage around the ear ( NOT too much pressure )

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR EAR INFECTIONS 

  • Avoid food items which produce dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items
  • Oil massage on the head is advised. Which alleviates ear pain
  • Take proper rest.
  • Avoid head bath during the period of ear infections 

YOGA FOR EAR INFECTIONS 

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – calms the mind and gets relief from ear pains

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
