SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DYSPAREUNIA

  • Burning pain or aching pain during intercourse
  • Pain after sexual intercourse

CAUSES OF DYSPAREUNIA

  • Infections
  • Injuries
  • Vaginal dryness in women
  • Intercourse after menopause
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Certain medications 

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF DYSPAREUNIA

Pathophysiology of dyspareunia is based on the causative factor. Generally, infection and inflammation cause painful sexual intercourse. Dyspareunia is one of the most common problems of postmenopausal women.

DIAGNOSIS OF DYSPAREUNIA

  • History taking
  • Diagnosis through signs and symptoms
  • Laboratory investigations to find out underlying pathology

TREATMENTS FOR DYSPAREUNIA

  • Anti-inflammatory medicines
  • Antibiotics for infections
  • Topical estrogen application in vagina

PROGNOSIS OF DYSPAREUNIA

  • Prognosis is based on the cause of the dyspareunia and condition of the patient. Generally, it is easy to treat.
  • Dyspareunia due to bacterial infection is easily cured by antibiotic therapy.

COMPLICATIONS OF DYSPAREUNIA      

  • Relationship problems
  • Loss of sexual interest

DYSPAREUNIA AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda,dyspareunia is managed based on symptoms.
  • According to Ayurveda dyspareunia can be correlated with Paripluta yonivyapad in women where there is the involvement of vata and pitta dosha also.

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF DYSPAREUNIA

  • Excess consumption of unctuous, sour, acrid food
  • Suppression of urges
  • Agantu factors – infections, injuries

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR DYSPAREUNIA

  • Avoid food items which produce dosha imbalance like sour, acrid and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Proper hygiene
  • Proper control of diabetes
  • Do not use soap for washing the genital area

YOGA FOR DYSPAREUNIA

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – gets relief from irritations associated with dyspareunia and calms the mind

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
