SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DENGUE FEVER

  • Symptoms usually appear within a week of infection.
  • Fever
  • Anorexia
  • Joint pain and joint stiffness
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Cutaneous eruptions
  • Skin rash

CAUSES OF DENGUE FEVER

Dengue fever caused by the bite of Aedes mosquito infected with dengue fever virus.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF DENGUE FEVER

The incubation period of dengue fever is 5-7 days, following which the disease has a sudden onset with fever, chills, anorexia, etc. The World Health Organization classifies dengue into 2 major categories: dengue (with/without warning signs) and severe dengue.

DIAGNOSIS OF DENGUE FEVER

  • The virus can be isolated from the blood of febrile patients.
  • Serological diagnosis
  • Haemagglutination-inhibition test 
  • IgM detection 
  • ELISA
  • PCR
  • Platelet count

TREATMENTS OF DENGUE FEVER

  • There is no specific treatment for dengue fever infection and it is usually self-limiting.
  • Analgesics
  • Antipyretic drugs like paracetamol
  • Fluid supplementation

PROGNOSIS OF DENGUE FEVER

Generally, it is curable and the symptoms are manageable. In the case of severe dengue, symptoms need special treatments like a blood transfusion.

  • Dengue hemorrhagic fever

DENGUE FEVER AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda,dengue fever management is based on the symptoms.
  • The clinical picture of dengue may be compared to a type of Sannipataj jwara.
  • In Ayurveda, presenting with cardinal features viz. jwara (pyrexia), shira shula (headache), nirbhugne lochana (retro-orbital pain), asthi-sandhi shula (arthralgia), chhardi (vomiting), kotha/rakta mandalotapatti (rashes). Hence, the drugs mentioned for the management of sannipataj jwara are planned to provide in dengue fever.

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF DENGUE FEVER

  • Excess consumption of acrid, salt, hot,  ununctuous food
  • Eating during indigestion
  • Agantu factors – infections
  • Improper administration of purification therapies
  • Depletion of body tissue

  • Increased body temperature
  • Weakness

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF DENGUE FEVER

Due to the causative factors doshas become vitiated and spreads to the entire body. Aggravated doshas enter the digestive system and combine with agni, accompanying the rasa, blocks the channels. Agni expels out from the site of digestion and spreads to all over the body and gives rise to jwara.

HOME REMEDIES FOR DENGUE FEVER

  • Intake of warm water frequently
  • Proper rest
  • Intake of water boiled with coriander and dried ginger

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR DENGUE FEVER

  • Avoid food items which produce dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items
  • Avoid visiting the disease prevalent areas
  • Proper sanitation measures to be followed.

YOGA FOR DENGUE FEVER

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – calms the mind and gets relief from the pain associated with dengue fever

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
