SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CONJUNCTIVITIS

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF CONJUNCTIVITIS

Infection and allergens enter the tear film and contact with conjunctival mast cells. Then IgE mediated reactions that cause mast cell degranulation and histamine release. Histamine promotes vasodilatation and oedema.

DIAGNOSIS OF CONJUNCTIVITIS

  •  Proper examination of eyes by the physician
  • Culture of secretions from eyes

TREATMENTS OF CONJUNCTIVITIS

  • Eye drops
  • Antibiotics – to control infections
  • Antihistamines
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs

PROGNOSIS OF CONJUNCTIVITIS

  • Conjunctivitis is a self-limiting disease. Generally, symptoms are manageable with proper treatments.

COMPLICATIONS OF CONJUNCTIVITIS

  • The spread of infections to other sites

  • As per Ayurveda, it can be correlated with ‘netra abhishyandam’

Due to the causative factors, excess vitiation of dosha occurs. The aggravated doshas reside on the conjunctiva and produce the symptoms of conjunctivitis.

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR CONJUNCTIVITIS

  • Avoid food items which produce dosha imbalance like cold, unctuous food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume a balanced diet rich in vitamin A 
  • Avoid exposure to sunlight
  • Avoid exposure to dust and smoke

YOGA FOR CONJUNCTIVITIS

  • Nadi shuddi pranayam    – calms the mind and gets relief from the eye irritations associated with conjunctivitis 

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
