Kutajarishtam is an Ayurvedic medicine for dysentery, diarrhoea and diseases of digestive system. It regulates the peristaltic movements.

Benefits of Kutajarishtam

Kutajarishtam is advised in dysentery & diarrhoea. But it does not stop the loose motion all of a sudden but expels the waste products and stools from the intestine. It improves the digestive fire and enhances absorption. It helps regulate the peristalsis and aids stop the diarrhoea & dysentery.

It is useful in piles, grahani and many other diseases of digestive system. It helps in irritable bowel syndrome, anaemia, skin diseases, ascites, food poisoning, fever, swelling etc.

It is beneficial in visceral problems like splenomegaly, hepatic disorders, pain & distension of abdomen, indigestion, belching, flatulence, etc.It is beneficial in vomiting and intestinal parasites.

Indications of Kutajarishtam

  • Jwaram teekshnam        – Acute and high fever
  • Dhananjayam                  – Vaata rogas, diseases of nervous and locomotory systems.
  • Durvaaram Grahanim    – Disorders of peristalsis& absorption, irritable bowel syndrome etc which are difficult to treat.
  • Raktatisaram                   – Bleeding from anus, stool mixed with blood along with loose motion.

Ingredients of Kutajarishtam

Conessi Kutaja Holarrhena antidysentrica. Wall.

It has been used in bleeding piles, diarrhoea, eczema, fever and colic.  It is beneficial in amoebic dysentery and many other gastro-intestinal disorders.

Black grapes Draksha/ Mridweeka Vitis vinifera L.

Grapes are a nourishing and slightly laxative fruit that can support the body through illness, especially of the gastro-intestinal tract and liver. Because the nutrient content of grapes is close to that of blood plasma, grape fasts are recommended for detoxification. The fresh fruit is antilithic, constructive, cooling, diuretic and strengthening. The fruit is also helpful in the treatment of varicose veins, haemorrhoids and capillary fragility. The dried fruit is demulcent, cooling, mildly expectorant, laxative and stomachic. It has a slight effect in easing coughs. It is used as a remedy for skin diseases and in diseases of the eyes.

Indian butter tree Madhooka Madhuca longifolia (Koen.)

It has hepato-protective, anti-oxidant, anti-tumour, wound-healing, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used in the treatment of skin diseases, respiratory problems, nervous system disorders, burning sensation and diarrhoea.

Beechwood Gambhari/ Kashmari Gmelina arborea

It has anti-pyretic, analgesic, anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, anthelmintic, anti-microbial, cardio-protective, anti-ulcer, gastro-protective, anti-cancerous, anti-hyperlipidemic and immunomodulatory activity. It is the one of the main ingredients in Dasamoola for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic property.

Fire flame bush Dhaataki Woodfordia fruiticosa Kurtz

It is an anthelmintic, in dysentery, leprosy, blood diseases, leucorrhoea, and menorrhagia.

Details of the manufacturing

As already discussed, Kutajarishtam has 5 herbal ingredients and jaggery.

All herbal ingredients should be washed well and dried up in shade.

Take one Tulam of Kutaja,1/2 Tulam of Mridweeka, 10 Pala each of madhookapushpa and Kaashmari in a clean vessel. Add 4 Drona of clean water into it. Make it boil. The fire should be kept low to make sure that all the active ingredients in the herbs needed are absorbed well into the water. Make sure to mix it in between with a wooden ladle. Reduce the quantity into one by fourth of the initial quantity. Once the quantity is reduced to one by fourth of the initial amount of water, remove the vessel from the fire. Squeeze and drain through a clean white cloth. Collect the decoction in a clean vessel and discard the solid waste. To this decoction, add 1 Tulam of Jaggery and 20 Pala of Dhataki flower.

It should be transferred into an earthen pot coated inside with ghee. Cover it with a clean white cloth and keep it closed and airtight. Keep it for 30 days in a dark place with low temperature. After 30 days, open it and filter through a clean white cloth. Keep it in an airtight glass bottle. Arishtam can be used for a longer period of time without any preservatives.

Dosha Dooshya Predominance with roga margas.

Kutajarishtam is Kapha-Pittahara and amapachana.

Dosage and Usage of Kutajarishtam

Dosage: 25-30 ml after food

Usage:

Arishtam is advised to be taken after food, once the ingested food and arishtam will digest together.

It is taken two times or three times a day immediately after food.

Exercises and Yoga.

As Kutajarishtam targets mainly GIT, following stretching exercises and specific yoga asanas like pavanamuktasana, vajrasana, bhujangasana etc are recommended.

Regular exercise helps improve bioavailability of the medicine and food ingested and leads to positive health.

 Yoga can maintain harmony within and with surroundings.

Recommended diet and behaviour

Diet:

  • To be avoided

Heavy meals and difficult to digest foods – cause indigestion.

 junk foods- cause disturbance in digestion and reduces the bioavailability of the medicine

 carbonated drinks – makes the stomach more acidic and disturbed digeastion

refrigerated and frozen foods – causes weak and sluggish digestion by weakening agni (digestive fire)

 curd – causes vidaaha and thereby many other diseases

Drink only boiled water

Light meals and easily digestible foods

Green gram, soups, buttermilk boiled with turmeric, ginger and curry leaves

 freshly cooked and warm food processed with cumin seeds, ginger, black pepper, ajwain etc

Behaviour:

Better to avoid exposure to excessive sunlight wind rain or dust.

Avoid lifting heavy weights and other vigorous physical activities.

Maintain a regular food and sleep schedule.

Avoid sitting continuously for a long time and avoid squatting.

Side effects and contraindications

No known side effects reported.

Diabetic people and people with gastric ulcer should not take arishta-asavas.
