BRIHACHAGALADI GHRITAM is an Ayurvedic medicine for gaining weight, improving health and immunity. Apart from curing many systemic diseases, it is used widely as an immunity modulator especially in degenerative & chronic ailments where immunity is compromised.

Benefits of BRIHACHAGALADI GHRITAM

Though it is a ghrutham based formulation, it is also considered as a rasayanam as it contains milk, and jaggery and many of the herbs are nourishing, strengthening and aphrodisiac in potency.

 It is very effective in degenerative diseases especially when the patient is physically weak. It is also advised to be taken by normal people who are physically weak due to exertion. It improves the stamina of the person. It can be used as a supplement or rasayana for athletes and sports persons.

It is advised to be used in many diseases of nervous and locomotory systems like tetanus, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, facial palsy, seizures, hemiplegia, spasms, muscle wasting, atrophy, dystrophy, etc. It is a specific medicine for epilepsy and psychosis. It is especially beneficial in hallucinations and delusions.

Many discomforts of digestive system like indigestion, belching, distension etc are addressed with this formulation. It improves digestive fire. It relieves constipation.

Ingredients of Bruhathchagaladyam ghrutham

DASAMOOLAM

It is a group of roots of ten herbs used as a combination in many formulations in Ayurveda.

Dasamoola is the Sanskrit name for a group of medicinal plants, classified as proving beneficial in cases of Asthma and difficult respiration. It was originally composed by Acharya Sushrutha. The name is derived from the words dasa (ten) and moola, translating to “root”. It includes the plants from the Laghupanchamoola and Bá¹›hatpanchamoola groups of medicinal plants.As discussed, t is a group of roots of ten herbs used as a combination in many formulations in Ayurveda.

Used together as a combination in Ayurvedic formulations, Dasamoola has Anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It works as a strong anti-rheumatic agent. It is useful in reducing edema. Being mainly Vaatahara it gives strength to the body. It is useful in all diseases related to nerves and muscles.

The ten plants included in Dasamoola are,

Indian bael    Bilwa Aegle marmelos

It has anti-inflammatory properties and it is effective in peptic ulcer. It is anti-diarrhoeal, anti-diabetic and anti-microbial. Being a part of Dasamoola (group of roots of Ten plants) it helps to enhance its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

Headache tree    Agnimantha Premna integrifolia Linn.

It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antinociceptive, anti-arthritic, anti-bacterial, anti-cancerous, anti-microbial, anthelmintic, immuno-modulatory, hypoglycaemic, neuro-protective and anti-ulcer properties. It is CNS depressant, Cardiac stimulant, and cardio-protective.

Indian trumpet flower  Syonaka Oroxylum indicum

It has anti-microbial, anti-diabetic, hepato-protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, immune-modulatory, nephro-protective, and cardio-protective properties.

It is useful in the treatment of diabetes, pain, fever, inflammations and asthma.

Beechwood Gambhari Gmelina arborea

It has anti-pyretic, analgesic, anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, anthelmintic, anti-microbial, cardio-protective, anti-ulcer, gastro-protective, anti-cancerous, anti-hyperlipidemic and immunomodulatory activity. It is the one of the main ingredients in Dasamoola for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic property.

Dabra Prisniparni Uraria picta

It has anti-inflammatory, expectorant and diuretic properties. It is used as a tonic to nerves and heart. It is useful in bone fracture healing.

Sal leaved desmodium  Saliparni Desmodium gangeticum

It is famous for its cardioprotective properties. It helps to strengthen the heart muscles. It has analgesic, aphrodisiac, diuretic, febrifuge, anti-inflammatory and haemorrhagic properties. It is used to treat fever, vomiting and diarrhoea, cough and asthma.

Brihati Solanum indicum

It has anti-oxidants. It also has anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, immune-modulatory, neuroprotective, diaphoretic, expectorant and stimulant properties.

Kantakari Solanum xanthocarpum

It has anti-oxidant and anti-cancer activities. It possesses anti-asthmatic, hypoglycaemic, hepatoprotective, anti-bacterial and insect repellent properties.

Puncture vine   Gokshura Tribulus terrestris

It is useful in diseases such as hormonal imbalance, sexual problems, heart problems, kidney problems and various skin diseases. It helps in reducing blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Indian ginseng Aswagandha Withania somnifera

The plant has been used as an aphrodisiac, liver tonic, anti-inflammatory agent, and more recently to treat asthma, ulcers, insomnia, and senile dementia. Clinical trials and animal research support the use of ashwagandha for anxiety, cognitive and neurological disorders, inflammation, and Parkinson’s disease.

Country mallow Bala Sida cordifolia Linn.

It is anti-pyretic, anti-inflammatory, contraceptive and anti-fungal activity. It is a tonic for strengthening nerves and muscles in various neuro motor diseases.

Wild asparagus Satavari Asparagus racemosus

It has anti-oxidants and immuno-stimulants.  It has anti-inflammatory, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-bacterial, anti-oxytocic, and reproductive agents.

Leptadenia Jeevanthi   Leptadenia reticulata (Retz.)

It is a revitalising, rejuvenating and lactogenic herb. It has anti-abortifient, anti-depressant, anti-epileptic, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, anti-tumour, anti-pyretic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic, diuretic, hepato-protective, and immune-modulatory properties. It is used in the treatment of haematopoiesis, emaciation, cough, dyspnoea, fever, burning sensation, dysentery, oligospermia, night blindness and other eye diseases.

Liquorice madhukam Glycyrrhiza glabra L.

It has anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant, anti-malarial, anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-hyperglycaemic and hepato-protective properties.

Black grapes Mridweeka/Draksha Vitis vinifera L.

Grapes are a nourishing and slightly laxative fruit that can support the body through illness, especially of the gastro-intestinal tract and liver. Because the nutrient content of grapes is close to that of blood plasma, grape fasts are recommended for detoxification. The fresh fruit is antilithic, constructive, cooling, diuretic and strengthening. The fruit is also helpful in the treatment of varicose veins, haemorrhoids and capillary fragility. The dried fruit is demulcent, cooling, mildly expectorant, laxative and stomachic. It has a slight effect in easing coughs. It is used as a remedy for skin diseases and in diseases of the eyes.

Purple roscoea lily Kakoli Roscoea purpurea Sm./ Roscoea procera Wall

It is a general tonic. Sweet in taste and cold in potency, it improves strength of the body. It can be used in the treatment of diabetes, hypertension, diarrhoea, fever, male infertility, leucorrhoea and many types of inflammation.

White lily Ksheerakakoli Lilium polyphyllum D.DON

It is sweet in taste and cold in potency. It works as an expectorant, aphrodisiac, diuretic, anti-pyretic, and a general health tonic.

Water lily Utpala Nymphaea nouchali Burm.f.

It is rich in anti-oxidants and a very good diet for diabetes mellitus. It has anti-oxidant, aphrodisiac, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-hepatotoxic properties.

Coco grass, nut grass, purple nutsredge Musta Cyperus rotundus L.

It has marked anti-inflammatory action. It also has anthelmintic, antioxidant and antifungal properties. The drug improves lactation, relieves fever, burning sensation, and excessive thirst. It is also used in treating diarrhoea, dyspepsia and skin diseases.

Red sandalwood Raktachandana Pterocarpus santalinus L.

It has anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, anthelmintic, aphrodisiac, anti-hyperglycaemic and diaphoretic properties. It is used in the treatment of fever, haemorrhage and dysentery.

Siamese ginger Rasna Alpinia galanga (L.) WILLD

 It is known to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions. It is one of the main ingredients of various formulations alleviating pain.

Wild bean Mudgaparni Phaseolus trilobus

It is good for eyes. It improves the quality and increases the quantity of sperm cells. So, it is used in many male reproductive disorders, like oligospermia. It is also used in the treatment of fever, worms, gastritis, indigestion, rheumatoid arthritis, and diarrhoea.

Blue wiss/rabbit vine Maashaparni Teramnus labialis (L.) Spreng.

It is a general tonic. Being cold in potency and sweet in taste, it gives strength to the body. It improves the quality and increases the quantity of sperm cells. So, it is used in many male reproductive disorders, like oligospermia. It alleviates fever, burning sensation, and diseases of the circulatory system. It may cause constipation in some persons.

Indian sarsaparilla Sariba Hemidesmus indicus (L.) SCHULT

It is a coolant and a potent detoxifier. It is demulcent, alterative, astringent, diaphoretic, diuretic, tonic, anti-pyretic, and blood purifier. It is used in leprosy, other skin diseases, fever, asthma, bronchitis, syphilis, pruritus, diseases of the urinary tractand leucorrhoea.

It is used in many inflammatory conditions including arthritis with muscle pain and joint pain. It has very potent anti-inflammatory property.

It is used in the treatment of loss of vigour, pain in the abdomen, kidney disorders, pain in the hips, swelling, fullness & distension of abdomen, diseases of bones & joints, skin eruptions, and respiratory diseases.

Whorled solomon’s seal. Mahameda Polygonatum verticillatum(Linn.)

It is used as a demulcent, diuretic, energiser, aphrodisiac, sedative, hypoglycemic, anti-tumor, analgesic, and a general tonic. It is a cardiac and nervine tonic,too.

Indian costus root Kushtham Saussurea lappa

It is a carminative, aphrodisiac, anthelmintic, and tonic. It stimulates the brain. It is used in the diseases of liver and kidney. It is also useful in the treatment of deafness, headache, paralysis, asthma, cough, chronic fever, inflammation, and ophthalmic conditions.

Jivak Jeevaka Malaxis acuminata D.DON

It sweet in taste and cold in potency. It works as an aphrodisiac and a tonic. It is used in the treatment of fever, burning sensation, tuberculosis, haematemesis, seminal diseases, emaciation and general debility.

Fly bearing malaxys Rishabhaka Malaxis muscifera/ Microstylis muscifera Ridley.

It sweet in taste and cold in potency. It works as an aphrodisiac and a tonic. It is used in the treatment of fever, burning sensation, tuberculosis, haematemesis, seminal diseases, emaciation and general debility.

Aromatic ginger/ sand ginger/kenkur/cutcherry/resurrection lily Satthi Kaempferia galanga Linn.

It is an anti-tussive, expectorant, anti-pyretic, diuretic, anabolic, antiseptic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, wound healing and carminative. It is a blood purifier. It is used in the treatment of gastro-intestinal disorders, asthma, rheumatism, epilepsy, wounds, skin diseases, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, flatulence, and cancer.

Indian barberry/chutro/tree turmeric Darvi/Daruharidra Berberis aristata

It has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal anti-diarrhoeal and anti-cancerous properties. It is used in the treatment of ophthalmic infections.

Large leaf beauty berry Priyangu Callicarpa macrophylla

It is anti-inflammatory, haemostatic, neuro-protective, anti-amnesiac, anti-tubercular, anti-oxidant, anti-microbial and analgesic activities. It can be used in the treatment of tumour, polydipsia, diarrhoea, dysentery, diabetes, fever etc. It is also used in obstetric conditions.

Triphala -a group of fruits of 3 drugs namely,

Chebulic myrobalan Pathya Terminalia chebula RETZ. & WILLD.

It is one of the main drugs in Ayurveda, one of the Rasayana and a member of an important group, Triphala. It is used in a wide variety of diseases as it possesses anti-bacterial anti-fungal anti-viral anti-diabetic anti-mutagenic anti-oxidant anti-ulcer and wound-healing properties.

Beleric myrobalan, Bahera Aksha Terminalia bellirica (GAERTN.) ROXB.

A very good healer of gastric diseases, common cold, leukoderma and also cures digestive disorders. It has laxative and anti-inflammatory actions. It is one of the important ingredients in triphala, an Ayurvedic formulation. Other properties for which it is used are as health tonic and as rejuvenator. It is used in treatment of piles also.

Amla, Indian gooseberry Dhatri Emblica officinalis GAERTN.  

Amla exhibits strong antioxidant activity. It is one of the most important plants in the traditional Ayurvedic medical system as well as in other traditional health systems for immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer and hepatoprotective actions. It is widely used for anti-diabetic effect. It is a part of the famous group of drugs called Triphala.

Indian valerian Natam Valeriana wallichii

It is useful in neurological, psychological and digestive disorders. It calms mind, strengthens nerves and prevents convulsions. It is used in the treatment of insomnia, epilepsy and paralysis. It has anti-inflammatory properties by which it is beneficial in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It is a carminative and anti-spasmodic. So, it is used in abdominal pain, flatulence, bloating, loss of appetite and indigestion. It improves the circulatory system and reduces High blood pressure. It is an ingredient in many ayurvedic anti-hypertensive formulations.

Indian silver fir Taleesapatra Abies webbiana LINDL.

It has anti-bacterial, mast cell stabilising, anxiolytic, anti-tumour, anti-inflammatory, anti-tussive, and CNS depressant properties.

Wild Himalayan cherry Padmaka Prunus cerasoides

It has anti-oxidants and is used to treat skin diseases and herpes. It is also used in vomiting, nausea and gastritis.

Cardamom Ela Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton

It can help in controlling asthma. It is beneficial in teeth and gum infections, cataracts, nausea, diarrhoea, as well as cardiac, digestive and kidney disorders.

Indian bay leaf Tejapatra Cinnamomum tamala

Indian rose chest nut/Ceylon ironwood/cobra’s saffron Nagakesara Mesua ferrea L.

It clears kapha, it is beneficial in urinary tract infection, poisoning, rheumatoid arthritis, pruritus, and oedema. It is beneficial in the treatment of fever, excessive thirst, sweating, vomiting & nausea, bad body odour, skin diseases, herpes etc. It is useful in some types of headache.

Common jasmine Jathikusuma Jasminum officinale

It is an aromatic herb with anti-ulcer, anti-oxidant, sedative and aphrodisiac properties. It is used in the treatment of hepatitis, cirrhosis. Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, dysentery and cancer treatment.

Cilantro seeds Dhanyaka Corriandrum sativum Linn.

It is an anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, diuretic, and anti-pyretic. It improves digestion and absorption; it is good for heart.

Indian madder Manjishtha Rubia cordifolia L.

It is a blood purifier. Used in the treatments of almost all skin diseases. It improves complexion. It enhances the liver functions.  Beneficial in diarrhoea and eye diseases.

Anar/Pome granate Dadima Punca granatum L.

It has a wide variety of uses. Medicinal properties of fruits and fruit shell are decided by its taste when ripe. Sweet ones balance all 3 doshas. They can cure excess thirst, burning sensation, fever, dosha in chest, throat and mouth. It is nourishing and aphrodisiac. It has antidiarrheal property.It gives moisture in the body, boosts intellectual power and physical strength.

Sweet and sour fruits are easy to digest, carminative, and improve digestion & taste. Sour fruits increase Pitta slightly, help in the cure of amavata and kaphadosha.

Himalayan cedar  Mahadaru Cedrus deodara

It is useful as an expectorant in cough. It relieves asthma and other respiratory diseases by clearing the airways and enhancing the movements of respiratory tract.

It has anti-diabetic effect as it helps reduce high blood sugar levels in blood.

It helps to calm the mind and improves sleep quality.

Chinese chastetree Nirgundi/Harenuka Vitex negundo L.

It has anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, expectorant, tranquilizer, anti-spasmodic, rejuvenating, anti-arthritic, anti-fungal, anti-hyperglycaemic and anti-pyretic properties.

Sour cherry Elavaluka Prunus cerasus Linn.

Details of the manufacturing

As already discussed, BRIHACHAGALADI GHRITAMhas 51 herbal ingredients, sugar, cow’s milk and cow’s ghee.

All herbal ingredients should be washed well and dried up in shade.

For preparation of ghrithakalpana,

We use

  1. Snehadravya                                 

Ghrutha (Cow’s ghee)                  – 4 Prastha

  • Dravadravya

Decoction of goat’s meat             – 4 Prastha

(1 Tula of goat’s meat into which 16 Prastha water added, boiled and reduced into 1/4th

Decoction of Dasamoola              – 4 Prastha

(100 Pala of Dasamoola into which 16 Prastha water added, boiled and reduced into 1/4th)

Decoction of Aswagandha           – 4 Prastha

(100 Pala of Aswagandha into which 16 Prastha water added, boiled and reduced into 1/4th)

Decoction of Bala                          – 4 Prastha

(100 Pala of Bala into which 16 Prastha water added, boiled and reduced into 1/4th)

Milk                                                  – 4 Prastha

Swarasa of Satavari                       – 4 Prastha

  • Kalkadravya (For making paste) – 1 Sukti each

+ Sugar               – 1 Prastha

Take one Tula of goat’s meat, add 16 Prastha of water into it.Boil and reduce it into 1/4th of the initial amount, ie 4 Prastha.

Like this, prepare decoctions of Dasamoola, Aswagandha, and Bala separately.

Take these decoctions in a Taamrapaatra (Copper vessel), add prescribed ghrutha, ksheera and satavariswarasa into it. Make it boil and cook in a low and steady fire. Add the kalka dravya(herba paste) slowly, mixing well. Make it boil and then cook keeping the copper vessel open with low fire. Reduce the quantity into the quantity of ghrutha. Make sure to mix it in between with a ladle. Also, the fire should be kept low to make sure that all the active ingredients in the herbs needed are absorbed well into the ghee. Continue cooking and stir in between. Check the Paaka as per Snehapakavidhi. Once the desired Paaka is attained, filter the ghruta. Add sugar after cooling completely. Mix well and keep it in air tight glass bottles after cooling. Ghrutha can be used for a longer period of time without any preservatives.

Dosha Dooshya Predominance with roga marga.

Bruhathchagaadyam ghrutham is Vaata-Pittahara and rasayana.

It acts on aabhyantara, baahya and madhyama rogamarga

Dosage and Usage of BRIHACHAGALADI GHRITAM

Dosage:

Depends upon the digestive power of the person. Usually it is given 15g-20g twice daily in a person with good appetite and digestion.

When used as Samana/Brumhana, Ghrutham is advised to take in empty stomach, once the ingested food is digested well and when the person has appetite.

Exercises and Yoga.

As BRIHACHAGALADI GHRITAMtargets mainly general health and immunity, regular exercises are advised. Also, specific Yogacharya including naadisuddhi pranayama, bhujangaasana, is recommended.

Regular exercise helps improve the bioavailability of medicine and food ingested and leads to positive health.

 Yoga can maintain harmony within the body and with the surrounding system.

Diet:

Heavy meals and difficult to digest foods – cause indigestion.

 junk foods- cause a disturbance in digestion and reduces the bioavailability of the medicine

 carbonated drinks – makes the stomach more acidic and disturbed digestion

refrigerated and frozen foods – causes weak and sluggish digestion by weakening Agni (digestive fire)

curd – causes vidaaha and thereby many other diseases

Drinking water boiled with dried ginger.

Green gram, soups, milk, ghee, fruits and vegetables, dry fruits and nuts in moderate quantity.

Behaviour:

Protect yourself from very hot & cold climate.

Better to avoid exposure to excessive sunlight, wind, rain, or dust.

Maintain a regular food and sleep schedule.

Avoid holding or forcing urges like urine, faeces, cough, sneeze, etc.

Avoid sedentary life. Be active.

Side effects and contraindications

No known side effects reported.

Contraindication

People with derangement in fat metabolism; may it be Hyperlipidaemia or obesity or hypercholesteremia or atherosclerosis or hypertension. Most of these, associated with weak digestion, too. In such people, the ghee preparation may worsen the condition rather than curing it. But the same herbs in a water-soluble form in the decoction can act as the cure for many such derangements, even for hypercholesterolemia.

Diabetic patients should not take it as it contains sugar.
