Aravindasavam is an effective Ayurvedic medicine for children. It is used as a general tonic which improves strength and immunity.

Benefits of Aravindasavam

This formulation is specially indicated to be used in children. It is beneficial in all types of allergic responses in children like respiratory infections and skin diseases.

It is used in many other skin diseases like psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, childhood eczema, scabies, acne, etc. Being a blood purifier, this medicine helps in healing skin problems. It is also found efficient in removing scars and improving complexion.

It improves functions of circulatory system. It is found beneficial in some cses of blood cancer in children.

 It corrects Malabsorption. It is found beneficial in many life style diseases and deficiency disorders in children.

It works as a general tonic for children. It helps to improve appetite, digestion, health, immunity, and strength. It is advised that it can be given in almost all diseases in children including Grhabadha (inflammatory diseases)

Ingredients of Aravindasavam

Sacred lotus Aravindam Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.            

It is used as astringent, emollient, and diuretic. It is used in the treatment of diarrhoea, tissue inflammation, and homeostasis. The rhizome extract can be used as antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory properties due to the presence of asteroidal triterpenoid. Leaves are used as an effective drug for hematemesis, epistaxis, hemoptysis, hematuria, and metrorrhagia. Flowers aere used to treat diarrhoea, cholera, fever, and hyperdipsia. In traditional medicine practice, seeds are used in the treatment of tissue inflammation, cancer and skin diseases, leprosy, and poison antidote. Embryo of lotus seeds is used in traditional Chinese medicine as Lian Zi Xin, which primarily helps to overcome nervous disorders, insomnia, and cardiovascular diseases (hypertension and arrhythmia).

vetiver Useera/ Sevya/ Udeechya Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) NASH

Vetiver is a coolant, yet aids in digestion. It is widely used in treating fever, dysuria, burning sensation, fatigue syndrome, skin disorders etc. Potable water prepared with this also has many health benefits like preventing ulcers.

Beechwood Kashmari /Gambhari Gmelina arborea

It has anti-pyretic, analgesic, anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, anthelmintic, anti-microbial, cardio-protective, anti-ulcer, gastro-protective, anti-cancerous, anti-hyperlipidemic and immunomodulatory activity. It is the one of the main ingrediants in Dasamoola for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic property.

Heart leaf/pickerel weed Neelolpalam Monochoria vaginalis (Burm.f.)C.Presl

It is a famous herb for its nephron and hepato-protective properties. The root is used to cure toothache, asthma, stomach and liver disorders. The entire plant excluding the root is eaten as vegetable by some local tribes and the leaves are used to treat cough, fever, etc. The paste of the tuber is used externally as an antidote to snakebite poisoning in the traditional Vaidya system.

Indian madder Manjishtha Rubia cordifolia L.

It is a blood purifier. Used in the treatments of almost all skin diseases. It improves complexion. It enhances the liver functions.  Beneficial in diarrhoea and eye diseases.

Cardamom Ela/ Thruti Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton

It can help in controlling asthma. It is beneficial in teeth and gum infections, cataracts, nausea, diarrhoea, as well as cardiac, digestive and kidney disorders.

Country mallow Bala Sida cordifolia Linn.

It is anti-pyretic, anti-inflammatory, contraceptive and anti-fungal activity. It is a tonic for strengthening nerves and muscles in various neuro motor diseases.

Spikenard Mamsi /Nalada Nardostachis jatamansi

It is a proven memory booster. It has anti-ischaemic, anti-oxidant, anti-convulsant, neuro-protective and anti-cancerous properties.

Coco grass, Nut grass, Purple nutsedge Kaseruka/Musta/ Ambudam Cyperus rotundus L.

It has marked anti-inflammatory action. It also has anthelmintic, antioxidant and antifungal properties. The drug improves lactation, relieves fever, burning sensation, and excessive thirst. It is also used in treating diarrhoea, dyspepsia and skin diseases.

Indian sarsaparilla Sariba Hemidesmus indicus (L.) SCHULT

It is a coolant and a potent detoxifier. It is demulcent, alterative, astringent, diaphoretic, diuretic, tonic, anti-pyretic, and blood purifier. It is used in leprosy, other skin diseases, fever, asthma, bronchitis, syphilis, pruritus, diseases of the urinary tractand leucorrhoea.

Chebulic myrobalan Pathya/ Siva Terminalia chebula RETZ. & WILLD.

It is one of the main drugs in Ayurveda, one of the Rasayana and a member of an important group, Triphala. It is used in a wide variety of diseases as it possesses anti-bacterial anti-fungal anti-viral anti-diabetic anti-mutagenic anti-oxidant anti-ulcer and wound-healing properties.   

Beleric myrobalan, Bahera Aksha/ Vibheetaka Terminalia bellirica (GAERTN.) ROXB.

A very good healer of gastric diseases, common cold, leukoderma and also cures digestive disorders. It has laxative and anti-inflammatory actions. It is one of the important ingredients in triphala an Ayurvedic preparation. Other properties for which it is used are as health tonic and as rejuvenator. It is used in treatment of piles also.

Calamus root/sweet flag Vacha Acorus calamus L.

The root is aromatic. It has stimulant, emetic, expectorant, emmenagogue, aphrodisiac, laxative, diuretic, antispasmodic, carminative, and anthelmintic properties. It is slightly tonic, and excitant, and forms a useful adjunct to other tonics and stimulants. It may be used in cases of flatulent colic, atonic dyspepsia etc.

Amla, Indian gooseberry Dhatri Emblica officinalis GAERTN.

Amla exhibits strong antioxidant activity. It is one of the most important plants in the traditional Ayurvedic medical system as well as in other traditional health systems for immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer and hepatoprotective actions. It is widely used for anti-diabetic effect.It is a part of the famous group of drugs called Thriphala.

Aromatic ginger/ sand ginger/kenkur/cutcherry/resurrection lily Satthi Kaempferia galanga Linn.

It is an anti-tussive, expectorant, anti-pyretic, diuretic, anabolic, antiseptic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, wound healing and carminative. It is a blood purifier. It is used in the treatment of gastro-intestinal disorders, asthma, rheumatism, epilepsy, wounds, skin diseases, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, flatulence, and cancer.

Indian jalap/Turpeth root Syama/Thrivrth Operculina turpethum L.

It is used to treat fever, oedema, ascites, anorexia, constipation, hepatosplenomegaly, intoxication, piles, fistula, anaemia, obesity, abdominal tumours, ulcers/wounds, worm infestation, pruritus and other skin disorders. It is the best among the herbs used for therapeutic purgation in Ayurveda.

Indian indigo Neelini Indigofera tinctoria

It is mild laxative. It can be used in the treatment of splenomegaly, ascites, fever, poisons, rheumatoid arthritis, pain & distention of abdomen, rheumatic fever, intestinal parasites and worms. It may cause mild giddiness & fainting when taken not supervised. It is good for hair growth.

Pointed gourd Patola Trichosanthes dioica Roxb.

It has ant-diabetic, hepato-protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and wound-healing properties. It has anti-oxidants. It is useful in lowering cholesterol and skin diseases. It acts as a laxative

Small-flowered fumitory Parpataka Fumaria parviflora AUCT. NON. LAM.

This drug is mentioned as the prime remedy of fever in Ayurveda. Fumaria has been traditionally used as a laxative and diuretic. This plant is applied in treatment for dermatologic conditions such as eczema. The drug is suggested to be beneficial in hepatobiliary disorders, and also for colic pain.

Arjun tree Partha Terminalia arjuna.W.&A.

It is an anti-oxidant, hypotensive, anti-atherogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagenic, and gastroprotective. It is used in combination medicines for reducing Hypertension.

Indian butter tree Madhooka Madhuca longifolia (Koen.)

It has hepato-protective, anti-oxidant, anti-tumour, wound-healing, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used in the treatment of skin diseases, respiratory problems, nervous system disorders, burning sensation and diarrhoea.

Liquorice Yashtimadhu Glycyrrhiza glabra L.

It has anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant, anti-malarial, anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-hyperglycaemic and hepato-protective properties.

Milk parsley Mura Selinum wallichianum

It has carminative, nervine tonic, antiseptic and anthelmintic properties. It is used in the treatment of epilepsy, seizures, hysteria, stomach disorders, intestinal parasites etc.

Black grapes Mridweeka/Draksha Vitis vinifera L.

Grapes are a nourishing and slightly laxative fruit that can support the body through illness, especially of the gastro-intestinal tract and liver. Because the nutrient content of grapes is close to that of blood plasma, grape fasts are recommended for detoxification. The fresh fruit is antilithic, constructive, cooling, diuretic and strengthening. The fruit is also helpful in the treatment of varicose veins, haemorrhoids and capillary fragility. The dried fruit is demulcent, cooling, mildly expectorant, laxative and stomachic. It has a slight effect in easing coughs. It is used as a remedy for skin diseases and in diseases of the eyes.

Fire flame bush Dhaataki Woodfordia fruiticosa Kurtz

It is an anthelmintic, in dysentery, leprosy, blood diseases, leucorrhoea, and menorrhagia.

Details of the manufacturing

As already discussed, Aravindasavam has 25 herbal ingredients, sugar, and honey.

All the herbal ingredients should be washed well and dried up in shade.

20 Pala of Draksha,

16 Pala of Dhataki,

1 Tulam(100Pala) of sugar

and 50 Pala of honey

 in an earthen pot. Pour 2 drona (32 Prastha) of cool and clear water into it and mix well. Cover it with a clean white cloth and keep it closed and airtight. Keep it for 30 days in a dark place with low temperature. After 30 days, open it and filter through a clean white cloth. Keep it in an airtight glass bottle. Asavam can be used for a longer period of time without any preservatives.

Dosha Dooshya Predominance with roga margas.

Aravindasavam is Pitta-Kaphahara.

It acts on bahya, and aabhyantara rogamargas

Dosage and Usage of Aravindasavam

Dosage: 25-30 ml after food in adults. Dose should be less in children according to age and body build.

Usage:

Asava-Arishtas are advised to be taken after food, once the ingested food and medicine will digest together.

It is taken two times or three times a day immediately after food.

Exercises and Yoga.

In children, Yoga and other exercises should be done only with professional guidance and supervision if needed.

In elders, as Aravindasavam targets mainly digestive tract and immunity following exercises and specific yoga asanas like Ardhamathsyentra asanam, Halasanam, Vakrasanam, Dhanurasanam etc recommended.

Regular exercise helps improve bioavailability of the medicine and food ingested and leads to positive health.

 Yoga can maintain harmony within and with surroundings.

Recommended diet and behaviour

Diet:

  • To be avoided

Heavy meals and difficult to digest foods – cause indigestion.

 junk foods and spicy food- cause disturbance in digestion and reduces the bioavailability of the medicine

 carbonated drinks – makes the stomach more acidic and disturbed digestion

refrigerated and frozen foods – causes weak and sluggish digestion by weakening agni (digestive fire)

 curd – causes vidaaha and thereby many other diseases

Milk,ghee,nuts and dry fruits in moderate quantity

Green gram, soups, buttermilk boiled with turmeric, ginger and curry leaves

 freshly cooked and warm food processed with cumin seeds, ginger, black pepper, ajwain etc

Behaviour:

Avoid sedentary lifestyle. Be active.

Better to avoid exposure to excessive sunlight wind rain or dust.

Maintain a regular food and sleep schedule.

Avoid forcing or holding of natural urges like urine, faeces, vomiting, hiccups etc.

Avoid Stress and emotional imbalance as much as possible.

Side effects and contraindications

No known side effects reported.

Diabetic people and people with gastric ulcer should not take arishta-asavas.
