Balding- Ayurvedic Treatment, Herbal Hair Oils, Diet

BALDING

Balding is due to excessive hair loss from the head. The term “balding” is most commonly used to refer to androgenetic alopecia, or male or female pattern hair loss.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS of Balding

  • Balding may be associated with alopecia
  • Thinning on top of the head
  • Receding hairline (in men)
  • Widening hair part (in women)

  CAUSES of Balding

  • Genetic factors
  • Fungus infective lesions of the scalp
  • Ulcerative lesions of the scalp
  • Drug toxicity
  • Normal ageing process
  • Male hormones called androgens
  • Frequent shampooing
  • Dandruff

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY of Balding

  • Due to the causative factors, gradual hair loss occurs. There is no chance of re-growth of hair. Finally, baldness manifested.
  • Genetics play a role in the predisposing factors for androgenetic alopecia, possibly affecting key enzymes like 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Both hormones are androgens.

DIAGNOSIS of Balding

  • Blood test – To find out the underlying medical condition
  •  Pull test – determine the stage of the shedding process.
  • Scalp biopsy- determines infection is causing hair loss.
  • Light microscopy- Microscopy helps uncover possible disorders of the hair shaft.

TREATMENTS of Balding

  • Medications
  • Laser therapy
  •  Protein-rich plasma (PRP) injections
  • Hair transplant
  • Nutrition- Intake of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.

PROGNOSIS of Balding

Prognosis is based on the cause of the diseases, duration and condition of the patient. Generally balding is difficult to cure or no cure.

COMPLICATIONS of Balding          

If the hair loss or alopecia progresses complete and permanent loss of hair may occur

BALDING AND AYURVEDA

In Ayurveda balding is described by the name of khalitya roga under the heading of kshudra roga (minor disease) or shiroroga (diseases of head & scalp).

It is mentioned in Ashtanghridaya that nine diseases occurring on the outer part of the head over scalp should be called shiroroga.

NIDANA- Ayurvedic CAUSES of Balding

  • Due to usna guna of pitta dosha individual of pitta prakriti starts hair fall and greying of hair earlier than individuals of other dosha prakriti.
  •  The hair tends to lose its natural colour with advancing age. Although Aging is a genetically predetermined lifestyle, dietary habits, mental status, social & family life and many other environmental factors may influence the ageing process and their unfavourable effects cause premature ageing and balding.
  • Hair fall can be caused by a decrease in asthi dhatu or vitiation of asthi dhatu. As hairs are formed by the waste product of asthi dhatu and hair dependent upon it for nutrition.
  • Excessive consumption of salt and kshara leads to khalitya.
  • Getting angry, talking & laughing too much, sneezing and overexertion after taking nasya leads to khalitya and palitya.

SAMPRAPTHI –MATURATION of Balding

  • Gradual falling of hair is known as Khalitya. When pitta combines with vata or kapha dosha to destroy the hair, it is called khalitya.
  • When the kapha dosha combines with rakta dhatu it results in degeneration and shutting down completely of hair follicles thus leading to baldness.

  • Apply oil on the scalp and massage for 15 minutes
  • Application of the paste of gooseberry along with milk.

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR for Balding

  • Avoid food items which produce vata dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because vata imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Patients of hair fall must avoid excessive use of salt and kshara in his diet.
  • Oil massage on the head advised. Which alleviates vata dosha

YOGA for Balding

Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – for getting calmness to the mind provide overall health. Mental calmness prevents hair fall.

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
